Our informal, bowling group is comprised of beginning to more advanced bowlers. Bowlers of all abilities are very welcome. You are encouraged to invite your senior friends, including non-residents of Sierra Canyon. Bowling is a great way to socialize, meet new friends, and exercise.

Clogging is a type of folk dance with roots in traditional European dancing from the British Isles, early African-American dance, and traditional Cherokee dance in which the dancer’s footwear is used musically by striking the heel, the toe, or both in unison against a floor or each other to create audible percussive rhythms. Clog is from a Gaelic word meaning “time.”

Ski with our Sierra Canyon Group during the ski season. Northstar is the preferred ski area since many of us have weekday season lift tickets for Northstar.  Wednesday is our regular day at Northstar.  May add days or change day depending on the weather and snow. Meet us on the mountain at mid-mountain lodge, first floor, just left of the left door off deck. Usually stop for lunch between 11:30 AM and noon.

May also carpool sometimes from Aspen Lodge.

The Easy and Intermediate Hiking Group is for those interested in hiking the many beautiful trails in the Reno, Truckee, and Lake Tahoe areas. We will be hiking on Tuesdays and occasionally on other days of the week to check out hiking trails for future hikes. All levels of hikers are welcome. Those wanting to do an easy hike will hike part of the trail with an average of 3 miles total.  Intermediate hikes will average 5 to 6 miles with less than 1200’ elevation gain.  Most of the hikes will be kept to a travelling time of 1 hour or less each way.  Also, Walt Keane has a Monday, Hiking/Snowshoeing Group, which hikes 6 to 10 miles with a limit of elevation gain of 1500’

People all over the world dance for pleasure, exercise, and socializing. Every country has interesting music. We do the dances of Greece, Yugoslavia, U.S.A., Israel, Scotland, and many others. Most dances do not require a partner. Singles and couples are welcome.

Golf – Men’s

Welcome to the Men’s Golf Group. This group was formed with the intention of getting out with others in the community who share the common interest of golf. This group is definitely about having fun. We have golfers of all levels but we all share the common thread of having fun on the golf course.  We even have ladies join us occasionally.

Golf – Women’s

The Women’s Golf Group meets on Wednesday mornings, April-October.  This is a fun group with no handicap or dues.  Just pay for your own golf and cart.  We have two types of outings:

1. On the 3rd Wednesday of the month, we meet at the Aspen Lodge for our SCHEDULED MONTHLY GOLF OUTING.  We carpool to an area 18 hole golf course.  We try to visit a different course each month.  By signing up for our group, you will receive an e-mail a few weeks ahead of our selected monthly outing.  To reserve a spot for that month’s outing, simply reply to the e-mail, your name and that you would like to play.  If you are reserving more than one spot, please include the full names of the other persons.
PLEASE DO NOT RESERVE A SPOT FOR THAT MONTH UNLESS YOU ARE COMMITTED TO PLAYING
The first 12 to sign up each month will be secured a spot. If we have more than 12 signup, we may be able reserve more tee times depending on the course.

2. On the other Wednesdays, call either Kay or Jill if you plan to golf. We meet at the Aspen Lodge and then carpool to the either Wildcreek Executive 9 hole course or another designated course.   No signup is required.

Hiking group will meet at the Aspen Lodge for hiking almost every week. Sign up with the Hiking Group to get on the weekly group email list and receive the emails that give the details of the upcoming individual hikes.

The hikes will usually be Mondays at 8:00 AM . There will also be some showshoe hikes during the winter months depending on weather and snow conditions. Times may vary throughout the season. Location may be determined at the last minute depending on the weather. Plan on being gone all day, especially for hikes, at Lake Tahoe, Donner Summit or farther away.

Hikes will vary from approximately 5 to 12 miles on Mondays. Some will be up mountain peaks and many will be to serene lakes. Some may be in the Reno area and some as far north as Gold Lake area or as far south as the Carson pass area, but most will be around Lake Tahoe or Donner Summit.

To learn various line dances, to challenge the brain, to improve motor skills / balance and to have lots of fun.
Monday’s class is geared for the true beginner.
Wednesday’s class is for the more experienced dancers.
Saturday’s class is all about having FUN, and less about teaching by including a mix of easier and harder dances, so everyone is welcomed to this practice session.

A fun and easy outdoor game for everyone. Join us every Friday morning to play a fun game of Pickleball. Open to ALL levels of players. In addition to doubles play, lessons on how to play and score Pickleball will be available. Please stop by and experience this very popular racket ball game for ALL ages and abilities. Hi Table Tennis Players – Our group meets Sunday mornings from 8:45am to 11:15am, Tuesday afternoons 12:45pm to 4:15pm and Thursday afternoons from 12:45pm to 3:00pm. We have three tables and encourage interested persons of all ability levels to join our weekly sessions. We play singles and doubles depending upon the participation on a given day. Doubles is especially fun when two players, one strong and the other of lesser ability, are matched against a similar pair. Table tennis is an excellent  sport for older persons, both men and women, to get weekly exercise while having fun during the process. It is a fast game, helps with one’s coordination and balance, and requires substantial concentration, keeping the brain active. We look forward to seeing new members.

The Sierra Canyon Walk and Talk Group is a friendly group of Sierra Canyon residents who meet at The Aspen Lodge on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to take a relaxed but brisk walk around the streets and trails of our community.  The meeting time changes with the season, check the calendar for the scheduled time.  This is a “co-ed” group, so both men and women are welcome.  Another bonus:  Friendly and well-behaved dogs are also welcome (with their owners, of course!) to participate in this group.  Following about a 30-45 minute walk, we meet back at the Lodge for a relaxed coffee break.  Join us for our friendly Walk and Talk!

Come join fellow residents in a lively game of water volleyball.  Games are held three times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Aspen Lodge swimming pool.  A portion of the pool is roped off on the shallow side, which is at a depth of 3.5 feet.  This allows players of all heights to enjoy playing a “friendly” game of water volleyball.  Ideally we prefer to have 10 to 12 players (5 to 6 per side).  However, the games will be held with a minimum of 8 players (4 per side) to a maximum of 16 players (8 per side).  If there are more than 16 players then the playing field can be extended to the whole width of the swimming pool.

Utilize the Nintendo Wii gaming system for residents to participate in weekly game of bowling. This is a great way for exercising hand and eye coordination without a lot of physical exertion.

Come out and enjoy a game of pool with fellow residents. Learn how to play pool or become an advanced pool player.

The Foodies Club is for people, who love to cook, enjoy fine food and who want to share their creations! The group plans to get together, decide on a full menu…from appetizers to dessert…and who would prepare what part of the meal. Each couple would be responsible for one part of the meal and the meal would be a progressive event…appetizers at one home, soup/salad at another, entrée at another and so on. This could be a once-a-month dinner party, every other month…or whatever works for the group.  Maybe even field trips to local restaurants to see what is ‘cooking’ around town…whatever is decided, it  simply has to be delicious!

Karaoke originated in Japan in the 70s. Kara is an abbreviation of the word Karappo meaning empty. Oke is an abbreviation of the word Okesutora, meaning orchestra. The singer fills the empty orchestra with song. Karaoke has become very populat over the years and continues to grow in popularity. Sierra Canyon Karaoke has become one of the most popular group events in the community. Hosts LeVoy Umphress and his wife, Paulette Dees, work diligently to make this a very fun event. There are many talented singers in our community and many people come to listen and socialize. We have more than 21,000 songs to select from and the most modern equipment to on which to play them. Everyone brings an appetizer to share and their individual choice of beverage. But the karaoke is free!
If you haven’t attended karaoke, you must give it a shot. Karaoke is usually on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. However, if there is a change, we will notify you.

Hopefully we will see you there.

Description: Movies, Food and Talk. We know there’s a group of you here at Sierra Canyon that enjoys movies. A few of us figured that Sunday afternoons are long without much scheduled at Aspen Lodge. We began a monthly Sunday matinee with lunch or dinner to follow. We discuss the movie at our post-viewing meal. We look for interesting and reasonable dining alternatives that are close to the theater. For example, a movie at the Riverside might be followed by dinner at Silver Peak or a movie at the Summit might find us dining at B.J.’s.
